Environmental Learning Center Launches Wild Lagoon Holiday Break Camps for Young Nature Enthusiasts

VERO BEACH, FL (November 14, 2024) – The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) announces its Wild Lagoon Holiday Break Camps, offering children ages 6-16 immersive outdoor experiences throughout the holiday season. These hands-on, feet-wet camps will run on select dates from November through January, providing exciting alternatives to indoor holiday activities.

“Our holiday camps transform school breaks into adventures of discovery,” said Barbara Schlitt Ford, Executive Director at the Environmental Learning Center. “Each session is thoughtfully designed to combine outdoor recreation with environmental education, ensuring children remain engaged while developing a deeper connection with Florida’s natural heritage.”

Camp Schedule and Highlights:

November 26, 2024 (9 AM – 1 PM)

  • Ages 6-10: “The Living Lagoon” – Features dip-netting, reptile encounters, and marine life crafts
  • Ages 10-16: “Bull’s-eyes and Botany” – Combines archery instruction with native plant exploration

December 23, 2024 (9 AM – 1 PM)

  • Ages 6-10: “Florida Reptiles” – Focus on sea turtles and snakes, including craft activities
  • Ages 10-16: “Survivor Island” – Adventure to Spoil Island via pontoon boat, swimming, and survival skills

December 27, 2024 (9 AM – 1 PM)

  • Ages 6-10: “The Living Lagoon” – Includes plankton lab exploration and aquarium visits
  • Ages 10-16: “Florida Survivalist” – Fort building, edible plant identification, and fishing

January 3, 2025 (9 AM – 1 PM)

  • Ages 6-10: “Turtle, Tortoises, & Terrapins” – Comprehensive reptile program with ambassador animals
  • Ages 10-16: “The Magic of Mangroves” – Canoe adventures through mangrove tunnels

Activities vary by session and may include:

  • Canoeing
  • Boat excursions
  • Spoil island swimming
  • Dip-netting
  • Survival skills
  • Archery
  • Wildlife encounters

Program Details:

  • Cost: $50 per person ($45 for ELC Members)
  • Location: Environmental Learning Center, 255 Live Oak Dr, Vero Beach, FL 32963
  • Required: Reusable water bottle, eco-friendly lunch
  • Recommended: Hat, bug spray, sunscreen

“These camps offer more than just outdoor activities,” added Liz Yerian, Education Coordinator. “They’re designed to foster environmental stewardship while creating memorable experiences along the Indian River Lagoon.”
